Dish Soap Bars Replace Dish and Hand Soap

The space around my sink was always somewhat cluttered.  With bottles of dish soap and hand soap, various plastic brushes and sponges, the cleaning supplies always crowded the sink area.  With the switch to bar soap at the sink, I have de-cluttered by eliminating the plastic bottles and housing my brush on my soap.  I love the cleaner look and feel.

Multi-Purpose

I am not sure why I never thought of using bar soap for cleaning my dishes before.  I used to have bar soap at the kitchen sink for washing my hands, but many years ago I switched to a plastic pump bottle of hand soap next to the bottle of dish soap.  With two plastic bottles next to the kitchen sink, we were going through plenty of plastic.

Once I switched to this Meliora dish soap bar, it was so easy to swipe my hand over the bar to wash my hands, I gave up the bottle of hand soap as well as the plastic dish soap bottle.  I definitely use less soap and create a lot less plastic waste than I did before.

Cuts Grease

We are finding it is even easier to use this bar soap than the liquid dish soap we had been using.  No need to keep putting down the brush or sponge to squirt some soap on our dish or pan.  Just scrub the brush or the sponge on the top of the bar and then scrub your dishes.  If you want to fill the sink with soapy water I find it easy to rub the bar with your hands as you hold it under running water.  When filling the sink, it makes enough bubbles to make your feel like you are getting your dishes clean.

The soap cleans just as well as the various liquid soaps I have used and does a good job cutting grease.   It also doesn’t seem to dry out my hands too much (which was one concern I had a bout using it for hand soap).

Lasts a Long Time

I have been using my large bar of soap for a couple of months and there is more than half a bar left.  To be honest, I have no idea how long a bottle of dish soap lasted, so it is hard to compare to this large bar of dish soap.  I paid over $10 for the bar, which makes it twice as expensive as a regular bottle of Mrs. Meyers and more than three times the price of Dawn dish soap.  But part of my rationalization is that it does double-duty as hand soap and dish soap.

In addition to being plastic-free (the paper box it comes in is compostable), this soap is palm-oil free, preservative free.  The bar is lemon scented but the aroma is not very strong.  I love the Mrs Meyers fragrances, and they are much stronger than the lemon scent of the Meliora bar.  But I would much rather go plastic-free than enjoy the Iowa Pine scent of liquid dish soap.

  • Double duty as hand soap and dish soap
  • Creates enough suds

Things I Don’t Love:

  • Fragrance could be stronger
