Dishwasher tablets are a great alternative to those big plastic jugs of detergent. I wrote a review a few weeks back on my favorite brand of plastic-free dishwasher tablets, If You Care, a few weeks ago. Check it out here https://theplasticswitch.com/dishwasher-tablets/
But there are other decent brands out there. These Ecover Dishwasher Tablets would be right up there at the top of the list if it weren’t for the plastic wrap on each tablet.
I have never liked to dishwasher pods. The plastic-like film pods filled with liquid or gel detergent come in plastic bags and always seemed wasteful. They were also more expensive than powder and they just seemed wasteful. These dishwasher tablets are a better choice than the powder that comes in the plastic-coated box or the pods in the plastic bag. These come in a cardboard box and contain plant-based ingredients.
My key concern when I switched to dishwasher tablets was whether the tablet would fully dissolve during the wash cycle. I have friends who use the dishwasher pods and have to cut them open and squeeze the contents into the dispenser in their dishwasher because they don’t always dissolve properly. But after months of using several brands of dishwasher tablets I have not had any problem with that. I simply drop the tablet into the dispenser, and when I open up the dishwasher at the end of the cycle, the tablet is fully dissolved and the dishes are clean. These Ecover tablets work great, and get all my dishes and pots clean.
The only issue I have with these tablets is that they come wrapped in plastic. Each tablet comes wrapped in a little branded pouch that includes the chasing arrows sign indicating it is #5 plastic–polypropylene. Soft plastic wrappers and polypropylene are not accepted for recycling everywhere, so these small wrappers will likely end up in landfill.
