I switched from toothpaste in plastic tubes to toothpaste tablets awhile ago, but I have encountered some barriers as I made the switch.
Fluoride has been a key stumbling block. For some reason, many toothpaste tablets are fluoride-free. I assumed it was because fluoride would prevent these brands from making an all natural claim. But I did some digging and fluoride is naturally occurring in water, plants, food, etc…, and there is little to no evidence of any health risks. On the other hand, fluoride has been proven to reduce tooth decay in many, many studies (NIH and the CDC have info on the benefits of fluoride). I happen to have weak teeth, and I live in an area without access to fluoridated water, making it really important that I find toothpaste tablets that include fluoride.
I have had a hard time finding toothpaste tablets in retail stores at all, but I have had luck searching online. Still, many are fluoride free. So I was excited when I found these Colgate tooth tabs that contain fluoride on Amazon. I overlooked the plastic cap and the higher price because these looked like a relatively good solution. So I ordered them and was excited to try them
Unbelievable Packaging FAIL!
Then the package arrived. Inside the box from Amazon was a red plastic bubble wrap mailing envelope from Colgate. What?! Yes, it is a glass bottle that could break. But they wrapped it in corregated wrap to protect it. And then they put it into the plastic bubble wrap, branded Colgate, with sustainability claims printed on it.
And sadly, on the side of the bottle they make more claims. It says: “This small bottle of toothpaste tabs represents a big Colgate commitment to sustainability and transparency.”
Things I Love:
- Contain Fluoride!
- The tablets worked well–easy to chew, nice minty feeling after
Things I Don’t Love:
- A total plastic switch FAIL
- Plastic top
- Plastic outer Packaging
- Glass in the bathroom scares me a little–I prefer aluminum
- The price for these is much higher than any other toothpaste tablet I have tried
Product Info:
- Like most toothpaste tablets, I had to buy these online. They are available on Amazon.
